“The dream came true – I’ve worked with Kim Basinger”
So, after the incredible success of the first part of “Fifty Shades”, have you been waiting to return to this character?
“Of course! You know, when the movie raised more than 500 million dollars we realized that we could relax, we were sure that the second movie would be made.”
This is your biggest project, has it changed you?
“Actually, this franchise has a strange effect on me. You see, my first baby was born three days before we started filming the first movie, and the second baby – two weeks before filming ‘Fifty Shades Daker’. So basically, yes, my life has changed, but I guess rather because of my kids than this project.”
You’re talking about Jamie as a person, but what about Jamie as the actor?
I’ve become a different kind of actor. Now I am able to choose projects more meticulously.
The second movie has even more sex scenes. Was it easier for you and Dakota this time, considering that you guys had been through this experience before?
“It was definitely easier. There was less pressure, and a more relaxed atmosphere. We understood each other at first sight. We also joked a lot. Now we are true friends.”
“You know, it’s all about the plot. The more intense it is, the more need there is for humor. Humor is the best companion an actor could have on set. It helps to relax and to interpret all the scenes well. Laughter is very contagious. We had to reshoot take after take, because we could not stop laughing. I remember, once Dakota and I – we were supposed to be super serious for a scene, but at one time she smiled … that was all. I could not help it … I just laughed. So that’s why we had to reshoot the scenes again. All the time.”
New actors have joined the project, including Kim Basinger. Tell us, what was it like working with an actress of that caliber?
“This is simply a dream! I’ve always been her fan! I still cannot believe I worked with her on the same set! She is an incredible actress. And she is very charming.”
Christian has many secrets, he is a very complicated character. What do you like most about him?
“I like its complexity. I respect his thirst for success and his willingness to move forward.”
How did you prepare for this filming? Did you read the book again?
“I read them during the filming of the first movie, so this time I just went back to the key moments.”
This time, E.L James the author of this trilogy, was also one of the producers of the movie. Was she on the set? Did she help you?
“Of course! She was on the set all the time! No one knows their own characters as she knows them. It helped a lot. The same cannot be said from all producers.”
Sam Taylor Johnson was the director of Fifty Shades of Grey and she is a woman. But this time, James Foley was the director, and he is a man …
“Yes! He is an incredible director! I have seen almost all his movies. And I was very excited to work with him. He had his specific vision of this story and he filmed it differently. He had a very difficult task. According to me, he did a great job.”
Would you say that the second movie is not just melodrama but also a thriller?
“Yes, it has this inherent tension that thrillers have.”
